Dr Annette Mackereth
Dr Annette Mackereth is a Psychiatrist, based in Perth, Western Australia.
She was born and raised in the UK, where she completed medical school, and soon moved to Perth to complete psychiatric training. She has worked as a consultant psychiatrist in WA for the past twenty five years.
Dr Mackereth has always held a strong interest in psychotherapy and the relief of psychological suffering. She believes that every person is unique and has a particular set of genetics, life experiences and life circumstances that interweave and contribute to their specific condition. She understands that many psychiatric and psychological conditions, particularly those that have appeared treatment resistant, have a basis in unresolved traumatic experiences from childhood that continue to negatively influence the way that a person thinks, behaves and experiences the world.
Dr Mackereth is Fellow and an accredited psychotherapy supervisor of the Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, teaching trainee psychiatrists. She also supervises psychiatrists and other allied health professionals in their psychotherapy practice.
Dr Mackereth is trained in a wide range of therapies including the individual, long term depth therapies (Insight Oriented Therapy, Gestalt Therapy), the more structured therapies (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectic Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Schema Therapy) and the newer, more focussed techniques to treat psychological suffering and trauma, such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Deep Brain Reorienting, Internal Family Systems Therapy and Imagery Rescripting.
In addition, she has expertise in the judicious use of psychotropic medication to treat mental illness and trauma, and always focuses on finding the lowest effective dose for each individual person. She recognises that some people do not need or want medication.
Dr Mackereth takes a compassionate and holistic approach and tailors her interventions to the specific needs of each person.
